"Rachel Dillon has a beautiful voice and is an accomplished songwriter. This six track CD is a delight from the beginning. I found it compelling listening and quickly found myself joining in the chorus!”

Musician Biography

With poignant storytelling and sensitive delivery, Rachel Dillon draws her listener in to the seemingly unsolvable landscape of human relationships and experience. Rachel was stirred to begin writing songs by the powerful imagery of artists like John Prine, Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch.

"Long Distance" is Rachel’s first recording. It features six original songs, including one that was shortlisted in the Australian Songwriter's Association Songwriting Competition of 2009.

In a recent review in Trad and Now Magazine, John Williams wrote of her EP, “Rachel Dillon has a beautiful voice and is an accomplished songwriter. This six track CD is a delight from the beginning. I found it compelling listening and quickly found myself joining in the chorus. Rachel’s voice has a distinct quality and she writes interesting, thought provoking songs.”

Leaving a fascinating career in insect science, and having travelled extensively around Australia, Rachel realized she not only wanted to play guitar and write songs, but devote herself to it. She resigned her ‘perfectly good job’ at the end of 2008, and, as if to provide even more songwriting material, drove 4000kms from the foothills of the Blue Mountains north west of Sydney, to live on the sandy west Australian coast.

Deeply personal lyrics drive Rachel’s folk inspired songs, interpreting life's unexpected sidetracks with sensitivity and humanity. Subjects range from the experience of our early convicts to the touching true story of an elderly couple trying to retire.

Horse mad whip cracker...

Rachel attributes a love of horses to the influence of her grandparents who were both skilled horse handlers into their seventies and eighties. These days Rachel satisfies a passion for horses by spending part of each year in the Kimberley in the far north east of WA, helping out on a remote cattle station. From a song writing perspective, Rachel finds the scale of the Kimberley landscape imposing and inspiring, and the simple station lifestyle liberating.

“I love spending time in the remote east Kimberley. You can't inhabit that lanscape without being struck with a sense of awe. Station life is often hot, hard work but it's good for the soul, and there's a constant stream of colourful characters passing through, always willing to lend a hand!"
