On the Verandah…
Fun, Music, Food & Friends
FOR THE PRESS - About the Event
Perth’s first On the Verandah show in October 2010 sold out a few days before the event. It was a fabulous night of food and music. For this one we have more fantastic musicians taking the stage and a full, sit down, home-cooked style dinner to be served early in the evening. Desserts will be served between acts, during interval.
The venue, Aranmore Hall, was relocated from country WA to Leederville in the thirties and has the perfect atmosphere for recreating the authentic feel of the Bluegrass “barn” shows that were held in the southern states in the fifties and sixties. We are aiming for a friendly, community atmosphere where people feel as comfortable as if on their own verandahs! We're bringing live music back into the community, supporting local issues and giving people a relaxed and friendly atmosphere to enjoy some top musos. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do as we'd love to keep it going into the future and maybe try some bluegrass breakfasts with bush poetry or a mini, folk/bluegrass festival.
About the Artists
Jane Germain and Ian Simpson
For several years now, Jane Germain and Ian Simpson have been playing their style of acoustic music together – from bluegrass to blues, country to western swing. The Perth based duo first teamed up for Jane’s “Chinese Whispers” album, and the recent release, “Lonesome Road”. Jane is a singer/songwriter with Chinese heritage and Ian has toured and recorded with Slim Dusty, Paul Kelly and many others.
2010 was a fantastic year for Jane and Ian, who had the honour of representing Australia at the World Expo in China.
2011 started on a high with Ian winning a Golden Guitar at Tamworth for “Instrumental of the Year”, from “The Banjo”, an album he recorded for the ABC with John Kane. Less than a month later Jane and Ian were up on stage collecting another award for “Best Vocal Group or Duo” at the WA Country Music Awards - the third year in a row they have received the award.
Joining Ian and Jane is special guest, fiddler and mandolin player, Adam Gare. Adam is a highly regarded musician and vocalist best known for his work with Paul Kelly and Uncle Bill, Bluegrass Parkway, and played alongside Ian in the larrikin bluegrass group, the Sensitive New Age Cowpersons.
About the Support Artists
Rachel Dillon, Quentin Fraser and Stephen Loss
Rachel has been playing guitar and writing folk ballads for about five years. This is her third “On the Verandah” event having staged one in Sydney and one in Perth. Rachel is a regular at various music festivals including Tamworth, and recently played support for Tex Perkins at The Vanguard, Sydney.
Quentin Fraser is a multi-instrumentalist from Wollongong, NSW whose ability to effortlessly cross between genres makes him highly sought after. He has played in many groups over many years, including the Evans Quartet and Karen Lynne's Bluegrass Band, Acoustic Shock.
Fremantle musician Stephen Loss had been playing blues and roots guitar for more than 30 years when, a few years ago during a mid-life crisis, he bought a double bass - telling his wife it was cheaper than a Harley Davidson! He has played bass with Bluegrass Parkway and currently plays with country blues band, String Dog and family trio, Shady Grove.
